At Studio Omo, the biggest transformations in residential architecture often begin with small, intentional moves. In one of our recent projects, a single design element — a staircase — became the heart of a full minimalist home renovation. The original stair was covered in worn beige carpet and wrapped in a clunky black iron guardrail that felt straight out of the ‘90s. It wasn’t just dated — it disrupted the spatial flow and aesthetic of the home. As a residential design-build studio, we stripped the stair down to its bones and started over — not just with new finishes, but with a completely reimagined form.

It wasn’t just dated — it disrupted the spatial flow and aesthetic of the home. Once the original stair was removed, we worked from the structure up — literally. It had to be reframed. Every element was considered not only for code compliance, but for rhythm, proportion, and flow. This wasn’t about inserting a new stair — it was about integrating it into the architecture of the home. The substructure was framed with care to support the curved form that would follow. Every radius needed to feel soft and continuous — never segmented. Curving the drywall was one of the most technically demanding parts of the project. To achieve the smooth, organic shape we envisioned, we used a mix of flexible backing boards and custom framing. The finish had to be flawless — no seams, no breaks, just one continuous surface that moved with you.

Drywall was bent and shaped around the stair’s curve, creating an organic silhouette that flows as naturally as the space itself. The transformation wasn’t just aesthetic — it was spatial. The new stair draws light through the home and leads you upward with grace. What once felt like a leftover piece of the past is now one of the most defining elements in the home’s interior remodel. Instead of prefabricated railings or panels, we opted for a custom-built system: a monolithic guardrail and handrail that wraps the stair like a ribbon. Lighting was integrated to project a soft, ambient glow onto the steps — subtle, functional, and atmospheric. It adds weightlessness to the experience of moving through the space.
